Biochar Carbon Removal: How to Secure Long-Term Offtake Agreements

3 min read

Long-term offtake agreements are becoming an important commercial foundation for biochar carbon removal projects. They can provide revenue visibility before a facility reaches full operation. They can also improve financing prospects by demonstrating that future carbon removal capacity already has a committed buyer.

However, securing an offtake agreement requires more than presenting a projected annual carbon removal volume. Buyers need confidence in feedstock availability, production continuity, carbon accounting, certification, and delivery over many years.

Build a Bankable Carbon Removal Supply

The first requirement is a credible supply profile. A buyer considering a multi-year agreement needs to understand how much carbon removal can be delivered each year and how consistently that volume can be maintained.

Project developers should establish a clear biochar production equipment model covering feedstock supply, operating hours, biochar yield, carbon content, and expected carbon removal volume. The model should also account for maintenance periods and reasonable production variability.

Feedstock security is particularly important. Long-term access to suitable biomass reduces the risk of production interruptions. Contracts with suppliers, documented waste streams, or established industrial supply chains can strengthen the project's commercial case.

A defined production pathway also makes the future carbon removal inventory easier for a buyer to assess.

Establish Verifiable Carbon Removal Quality

Long-term buyers are purchasing a climate attribute rather than simply a physical commodity. The carbon removal therefore needs a robust chain of evidence.

A project should define its methodology, monitoring requirements, data architecture, and verification pathway at an early stage. Important parameters can include feedstock origin, production temperature, residence time, biochar yield, carbon content, storage pathway, and emissions associated with the process.

Third-party certification or registry acceptance can further reduce uncertainty. Technical validation of the pyrolysis machine for biochar can also help establish that the proposed process is compatible with the intended carbon removal methodology.

The objective is to create an auditable carbon removal unit with a clearly documented provenance rather than an unsupported estimate of future removal.

Match the Offtake Structure to Project Development

The structure of the agreement should reflect the project's development stage.

An early-stage project may begin with a letter of intent or conditional offtake agreement. As permitting, financing, equipment procurement, and certification progress, the agreement can move toward a binding long-term contract.

Several commercial parameters normally require clear definition:

Contract Element

Key Consideration

Contract period

Multi-year delivery commitment

Annual volume

Minimum and maximum delivery range

Delivery schedule

Expected issuance or delivery window

Price mechanism

Fixed price, indexed price, or hybrid structure

Quality criteria

Certification and carbon removal requirements

Shortfall mechanism

Treatment of under-delivery

Force majeure

Events affecting production or delivery

Environmental attributes

Ownership and transfer of associated claims

This structure gives both parties a clearer allocation of operational and market risk.

Demonstrate Project Execution Capability

Buyers evaluating long-term carbon removal supply also examine whether the project can actually reach commercial operation.

A detailed implementation schedule can show the progression from feedstock preparation and equipment procurement to installation, commissioning, verification, and regular production. Equipment specifications should align with the proposed throughput and operating profile.

Operational evidence can strengthen this case. Existing production data, pilot testing, equipment validation, and previous project experience can demonstrate that the proposed process is not purely theoretical.

For larger offtake commitments, buyers may also examine site readiness, feedstock logistics, maintenance strategy, product storage, emissions management, and contingency planning.

Create a Transparent Delivery and MRV Framework

Long-term offtake depends on predictable delivery. A project therefore needs a measurement, reporting, and verification framework that can generate consistent production records throughout the contract period.

Digital data collection can connect operating parameters with carbon accounting. Relevant information may include feedstock quantity, moisture, reactor conditions, energy consumption, gas utilization, biochar output, and storage destination.

The resulting data should support both registry requirements and buyer due diligence. Clear documentation reduces the need for repeated manual verification and helps resolve discrepancies before they affect credit issuance.

Build the Offtake Case Around Buyer Requirements

A long-term agreement becomes easier to negotiate when the carbon removal product is aligned with the buyer's procurement requirements.

Some buyers prioritize delivery certainty. Others place greater emphasis on durability, additionality, feedstock sustainability, geographic origin, or certification. The project should therefore define its carbon removal attributes before approaching potential offtakers.

A strong commercial package combines four elements: reliable feedstock, bankable production capacity, verifiable carbon removal, and a clearly defined delivery mechanism.

When these elements are established early, the project can move from selling an uncertain future volume to offering a structured and traceable carbon removal supply. That distinction is central to securing longer-term offtake commitments.
